On Thursday 24 October, A-Level Physics students from Fullbrook 6 were given the opportunity to present their Independent Research Projects to Professor John Perkins from The University of Manchester.
Mrs K Moore, Principal of Fullbrook said “Year 13 students’ professional science presentations were innovative and awe inspiring. At Fullbrook we are proud to be supporting the scientists and engineers of the future.”
The students have been developing their projects over the last half-term based on self-chosen topics, aiming beyond their classroom learning, and designing the focus and content based on an aspect of the A-Level curriculum which interested them.
This independent piece of study received limited input from teachers, with students required to submit safety briefs and conduct in depth research in their own time. Projects ranged from a study of different styles of aircraft wings, to a demonstration of superconductivity, and a homemade antenna which downloads images from climate satellites in orbit.
As part of their efforts, Professor Perkins was invited to visit the students to see their projects and chat with them about their studies.
Professor John Perkins commented “It’s a delight for me to visit Fullbrook, a school committed to excellence in STEM education. I was particularly looking forward to meeting A-level Physics students at Fullbrook to hear of their interests and their plans for the future. Their presentations covered a wide range of subjects and were all of a very high standard. I thoroughly enjoyed my visit.”
Forming part of Fullbrook School, a Specialist Mathematics, Science & Technology (STEM) College with Academy Status, Fullbrook 6 offers students an excellent base to study A-Levels in those subjects.
